I read The Hobbit when I was eight or nine years old. That was the end of any chance I had at a normal relationship with reality. Tolkien led to The Lord of the Rings, Dragonlance led to D&D, and before long I was spending hours drawing dungeons on graph paper and building maps of worlds that only existed in my head.

Then life happened.

I joined the army at sixteen, straight from finishing my GCSEs. I served for eighteen years — two as a junior soldier and sixteen as an adult — and loved every minute of it until my body decided otherwise. A back injury meant I was medically downgraded, and I couldn't in good conscience give orders I could no longer carry out myself. So I left.

What followed was ten years in the commercial sector as an operations and project manager, running national teams that installed communications and power infrastructure across the country. It was demanding, often rewarding, and ultimately broke me. The stress and anxiety ground me down until I hit a wall I couldn't push through.

Then in 2019, I lost both my parents within three months of each other. My mum in March, my dad in June. Grief does something strange to your priorities. Suddenly the long hours and thin rewards of the corporate world didn't make sense any more. I started asking what I actually wanted to do — and the answer had been staring at me my entire career. From my very first days in uniform, I'd spent my life teaching and training people. It was the thing I kept coming back to, the thing that felt right.

So I made the switch. I became a teaching assistant while I completed my Open University degree, earned my BA Hons, qualified as a teacher, and now I teach mathematics at a secondary school — Key Stage 3 through to A-level. I also serve as Head of House, which means I get to be part of the pastoral side of school life too. It's the best decision I ever made.

Somewhere around 2021, I stumbled across the LitRPG genre through SL Rowland's Sentenced to Troll and fell headfirst down the rabbit hole. Aleron Kong, Jez Cajiao — authors I now feel lucky enough to call friends — showed me what was possible when you blended game mechanics with proper storytelling. That eight-year-old drawing dungeons on graph paper suddenly had something to say again.

I was forty-eight when I began writing The Amatherean Tales in February 2024, and everything changed. Published through Podium Audio, the series follows SJ — a fae assassin named after my wife, my best friend, and the reason any of this works. I write at four in the morning before the school day starts, fuelled by coffee and stubbornness, building a world I hope readers lose themselves in the same way I once lost myself in Middle-earth.

I live in Oxfordshire with SJ, our three grown-up children (when they visit), and Daphne — the pet beast who keeps us all on our toes.

If this journey proves anything, it's that the best stories sometimes start late.
